Ever wonder what the different parts of your homeowner’s policy represent? You’re not alone. Let’s break down the six core coverages that make up a standard home insurance policy so you can feel confident and prepared if you ever need to file a claim.

First up is Coverage A, or Dwelling Coverage. This protects the physical structure that is your home, everything from the walls and windows to the roof and doors, up to the policy limit. This limit is based on the cost to repair or rebuild your home. But you’ll want to keep an eye on it. With inflation and rising construction costs, you need to make sure your limit does not lag behind the true cost of a repair.

Next, we have Coverage B, or Other Structures Coverage. Think of structures that are not attached to your house, but are still permanent fixtures on your property, like a detached garage or even your fence. This portion of your home insurance policy protects these types of structures.

Coverage C is for your Contents. This protects your personal belongings, clothes, electronics, and furniture up to a specific limit.

If a covered loss makes your home uninhabitable, Coverage D, or Loss of Use, kicks in. It helps pay for additional expenses you may incur as a result, like hotel stays, rental housing, or even pet boarding while your home is being repaired.

Coverage E is Personal Liability. If you or a household member is found responsible for causing injury or property damage to someone else, this coverage helps protect you by covering legal costs and potential settlements or judgments.

Finally, Coverage F covers medical payments for guests injured on your property. It’s designed for third parties, not for you or those living in your home.

“You can truly understand the value of your home insurance when you have a claim. My husband and I experienced firsthand how easy it was to work with The Andover Companies. A tree fell on our property, blocking the driveway. We submitted a claim with Andover and within days had a check in hand to reimburse us for the tree removal. The process was seamless.”
