WATER BACKUP AND SUMP DISCHARGE OR OVERFLOW COVERAGE HIGHLIGHTS

A standard home insurance policy generally provides coverage for water damage if it is caused by a sudden or accidental event, like a burst pipe. However, if water or waterborne materials enter your home due to a drain or sewer backup or an overflow or discharge from a sump, sump pump, or related equipment, the resulting losses may only be covered if you have Water Backup Coverage.

If a backup occurs due to a covered event, Water Backup and Sump Discharge or Overflow Coverage provides additional, limited coverage for repairs and mitigation related to the following types of direct physical losses:
  • Structural, such as walls and flooring
  • Personal belongings, such as furniture, electronics, and carpets
  • Standing sewage in the home
  • Minor mold damage that is the direct result of the water or sewer backup
  • Medical Payments to Others
  • Loss Assessment

DO YOU NEED WATER BACKUP COVERAGE?

While this home insurance endorsement is generally a valuable add-on coverage for every property owner, the following questions may help you evaluate your level of risk for a water or sewer backup or sump pump overflow:

  • Do you live in a climate that gets lots of storms or periods of heavy rainfall?
  • Does your community experience frequent or seasonal power outages?
  • Do you have an older home or a sump pump that is not brand new?
  • Is your area’s sewer system aging?
  • Do you have a basement?
  • Are trees located close to your home?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, your home may be vulnerable to a water backup. Please contact your local insurance professional about broadening the protection for your property with Water Backup Coverage.

“You can truly understand the value of your home insurance when you have a claim. My husband and I experienced firsthand how easy it was to work with The Andover Companies. A tree fell on our property, blocking the driveway. We submitted a claim with Andover and within days had a check in hand to reimburse us for the tree removal. The process was seamless.”
